Why this guy got the whole asking price

This guy Neville got the full asking price for a couple of original prints he had painted.

To put you in the picture this was in Barbados at “Oistins Fish Fry” which is a local spectical full of reggae, great food and local craft stalls.

I came across this amazing artist Neville who gave me his price for an original piece of art he had painted in 2010. By that I mean he said his price with such commitment and certainty that I could not even try to negotiate. I then, however came across another piece that clearly belonged to the first i.e. I had to buy both pieces.
Now I figured that this was a clear sign that I could negotiate so I did and indeed I was successful. Off I went to get the extra cash from the cash machine. On my way I was thinking about what had just happened in my negotiation with Neville and came to the conclusion that although I felt great about my negotiation skills, if I want to improve my own ability in getting paid what I am worth then in the case with Neville he should get his full price and not my negotiated price.
I promptly went back and gave Neville his full asking price knowing that the additional money I had just spent was serving both Neville as a local talented artist who, in my eyes, had mastered the art of knowing his value and getting it but also that I had learnt a valuable lesson and deserved my true value in life as well. Neville was surprised and grateful which was more valuable than the money itself.

I will be keeping in touch with Neville and hope to buy more of his art in the future.

Drive by Daniel H. Pink

The book “Drive” by Daniel H.Pink is quite a book. It covers the topic of what motivation and uncovers some surprising  truths surrounding incentives and how these often have the opposite desired effect. A great read with many lessons that can be applied to your life and your business.

Perhaps they should apply some of this books teachings to the banking sector as a whole – or rather this sector is the exception that proves the rule.

Photography revolution is in progress right now – find how why!

Yes that’s right a photography revolution in in progress right now and I am going to share it with you.

Since the introduction of the modern SLR (Single Lens Reflex) cameras and picture taking has evolved year on year. The SLR or todays DSLR (Digital) gave the photographer the ability to take a picture and capture a moment in time that allowed him/her to create a particular photograph. Now when I say “capture” I mean that when the photographer snaps they capture the light focus depth of field which give the picture its creative flare.

One of the biggest barriers to entry for any budding photographer was understanding Aperture, Exposure, Depth of field and capturing the moment as the eye is seeing it, right now. The modern day DSLR or compact digital camera, set on automatic, does deal with this quite well but only by guessing which part you actually want to focus on. Not ideal all of the time.

So now imagine for a moment that you can snap a picture and at a future date amend the focal point and zoom according to the desired outcome. Interested in hearing more? If yes then read on…..

Enter a new company called “Lytro” based out of the US. They have created a camera that creates “Living Pictures” – the camera captures all the possible light the is in the frame from each and every direction allowing for their technology to take over and give you the creator the freedom to continue with your creativity when back at home after the moment has passed.

So if you are interested in entering the new world of “Living Pictures” then head on over to Lytro Cameras and buy one. Unfortunately they are only shipping in the US right now but I am sure that this will change in time.

Disclaimer: I am not in any way associated with this technology or this company and no affiliate links are used here. I just simply love this technology and cannot wait for my new camera to arrive.

Bob Dylan – Tangled up in Blues

This, quite simply, is a great track. I came across this track while snowboarding one day.

It was a sunny day in the Italian Alps [Passo Tonale] and the track started playing while snowboarding. I didn’t even know I had the track, needless to say it further enhanced my day overall. The original track is a little more complete than the video link above however good none the less.

Yacht-Services.com

Yacht Services

My first web project has finally received a new logo. I set Yacht-Services.com up with a friend and business partner John Hildebrand back in 2000. It was oficially launched at the Fort Lauderdale boat show in September 2000.

The site was the first online yacht recruitment service. It was a huge learning experience that has successfully seen the site grow to being a prominent site for the search for and placement of crew.

Anyway I hope that you like the new logo.

Dropbox is a great service that gives you access to back up and share files with your colleagues, family or the general public. The key benefit is the ability to retrieve a file from the cloud (web) in the absence of your actual computer itself. i.e. if you are at friend or out on the road and need access to a file you simply login and download the file in question.

If you have additional machines it automatically syncs the files that you add to Dropbox across all machines without you actually needing to transfer the files consciously.

Any this is a great service so please take a look and see if this is of benefit to yourselves.

Tezabi Group

Tezabi Group Logo

I recently set this company up to administer and deal with all domain name and affiliate marketing ventures I embark upon. My new organisation will act as the hub for all ventures of this nature.

This is exciting as I have been working on projects like these since 1999 and shows the value of some of my assets as stand alone domains but more importantly by combining them with appropriate affiliate products I see these domains as true long term investments.

The key activities involve the following:

Brand development

I define this as the building out of a domain into a fully functioning business and brand. This has a two fold benefit to myself and potential investors Tezabi Group investors.

1. Domain name – itself has intrinsic value (all-be-it that this is often a bit of a moving target given the numerous ways to value a digital asset of this sort)

2. Income generating – by building out a domain to becoming a business you generate income that will likely grow over time.

The 4-Hour Body by Tim Ferris

Todays book is “The Four Hour Body” by Tim Ferris. It is a great book. I have been reading it on and off for a few months. It has resulted in me following a few of the chapters “biblically”.

Having adopted some of the advised workout programs, based on four hours a month, I have noticed a huge difference in my personal fitness and energy levels. I have also particularly enjoyed the chapter about nutrition and that giving yourself one day per week when you can eat anything, (guilt free) can have an added benefit to your fitness development, all I can say it that it works. To learn more I can highly recommend this book, a very easy read that you can dip in and out of as you prefer.

The Wisdom of Crowds by James Surowiecki

Hi – todays read. Well I didn’t read it today but want to share this one as it was pivotal to my understanding of the world we live in today.  The book is called “The Wisdom of Crowds: Why the Many Are Smarter Than the Few by James Surowieki”

I read this book a number of years ago in actual fact it was one of those books that you start to read then stop for a period then pick it back up again. The moment I picked it back up – the book turned a corner and blew me away with the power of the message. The online world had moved on a good bit with Twitter less than a year old and Facebook, only three years old, having just crossed the 20 million user registrations. Now given that by the end of 2010 user numbers were in excess of 500m users, this is clearly the wisdom of crowds in action.

The book has helped me understand more clearly the psychology of what is happening in the world of social media and how just a little insight into this phenomenon can help your own business evolve by engaging, even in a small way, more with your customers and with social media tools.

I lost a friend today – making life happen.

Hi All,

I dropped in to visit my old boss today, Herbert Thayer. I formerly worked as a Ski Instructor in Austria, specifically at Ski School Kitzsteinhorn (Schischule Thayer) – I originally worked there 20 years ago.

As you might guess, I had a great time. However today I found out about a friend, fellow instructor, who is now no longer with us.

Let me explain, on the 11 November 2000 there was a devastating accident which involved the main funicular railway. This means of transport, for on average 150+ passengers each trip, brought them to one of the most reliable ski areas accross the region.

Although I knew about the accident happenning I had a fleeting thought that perhaps, allbeit a long shot, that I might have known someone onboard. I never called to find out.

It felt selfish to call as I knew that the whole region knew someone onboard. Instead I took a moment to pay respect to all that perrished, (155 in total), and left it at that.

So, on my visit today to lookup my former boss, Herbert Thayer. I learnt that one of my fellow instructors, Jakob, was indeed on board and died that day. A great instructor and ambassador for skiing, fun loving and generally an all round great guy. A great loss.

It might seem a little late to pay my respects but important for me to do so.

It made me realise one thing that is not to wait for life to happen to me but more to make life happen for me. i.e. my agenda. As with anything the thing is not the thing, it is one step removed. This is more a message for myself but thought that it is important to share with all.

All the best Jakob, my friend and fellow instructor.

Prost mein freund.

Domaining anecdotes for 2011

1-1-11 – what a great date. Aside from being all ‘1s’ – its the date that I turn a new leaf in domain blogging.
Having spent much of 2010 reading and occasionally commenting on others domainers blogs time has come for me to contribute as well.

Domainers I have enjoyed the most include:

Domain Shane  (DomainShane.com)
Elliot Silver (ElliotsBlog.com)
Morgan Linton (Domainvestors.tv)
Rick Schwartz (RicksBlog.com)

I plan, over time, to provide some good Domaining anecdotes for all to read and enjoy.

All the best
Iain.

Domaining UK meetup group

Just today, having completed five full days of meeting domainers, I have decided to setup a meetup group. The group is called Domaining UK and will act as a medium for all domainers here in the uk including those who have an interest in domaining in the UK.

Please join the group – it will be a great way to learn and share your experience so as to improve all the earning potential of our respective domain name portfolios.

See you all soon at our first meetup still to be arranged.

Domaining & Investment for the future

“I was right……..domain names are valuable”

This might seem an obvious statement – however I would like to share my story with you.

Domain names are key in any on line business strategy.

Having bought my first domain in 1999 I was a relative early adopter in the world of domain investing. This post will share a little part of my experience to date.

Italy 1999:

I was working in Italy on a private luxury yacht – specifically, at this time, I was located in a small fishing village called Agropoli. My girlfriend (at the time) and I were taking some time out.

On this particular day I was in an internet cafe and it occurred to me that these things called domain names were an essential part of any web strategy.

So I started searching.

I started with searches for some really obvious ones. My country and city. Scotland.com Edinburgh.com all were taken. It was always clear to be that any domain purchase had to be generic in nature and to always avoid brands however tempting it might have been. It was clear to me, after a few searches, how far behind corporations were in the adoption of a any Domain name strategy, still keep clear, its not worth it for your own long term integrity.

“I found one” checkit.org – now, in the world of keyword domains you might say that this domain was not of any real value. My thinking was that .com and .net were gone so .org was a good start. As I started to go through the registration process I had this feeling that my fellow internet cafe users were all “on my case” and they were going to hand reg ALL remaining domains whilst I was merely paying for my first. This was clearly a ridiculous thought considering the domaining world we live in today.

There is however a small relative truth in what I am saying as there are many other domainers who snapped up many other keyword domains that now provide them with passive income and /or have given them a significant boot in their net worth through domain name sales.

Today I am sitting on around 350 domain names some worthless some have small value – however the one consistent aspect is that all are generic in nature and have a strategic thought or mental business plan or idea for each.

This is a short post to get me started in sharing my experiences with you. I will post my domain name ideas here as they materialise.

Thanks

Iain
